Off-road forklifts are designed for operation on rugged, muddy, soft, steep and other harsh road conditions. Compared with ordinary forklifts that mainly work on flat and hard roads, they have many special features in their construction, which are mainly reflected in the following aspects:
1. Chassis and tires:
Strong buoyancy: The wide ground contact area reduces the pressure and prevents the vehicle from sinking on soft ground.
Good cushioning and shock absorption: Low-pressure pneumatic tires can effectively absorb bumps and shocks on the road, protect vehicles and cargo, and improve driving comfort.
High ground clearance: The chassis is much higher than ordinary forklifts, allowing it to easily cross obstacles such as stones, tree roots, gullies, etc., and avoid chassis scratches.
Four-wheel drive: Almost all off-road forklifts are equipped with four-wheel drive as standard, ensuring that all wheels can get power, greatly enhancing the climbing ability and passability on slippery, soft or steep slopes.
2. Power system:
High-power diesel engine: Large-displacement, high-torque diesel engines are commonly used to provide sufficient power to overcome the needs of heavy-load climbing, soft ground resistance, and driving on unpaved roads. Diesel engines are also more adaptable to outdoor environments.
Powerful cooling system: The coolers of the engine and hydraulic system are usually larger in size and more reasonably designed in position to ensure effective heat dissipation under conditions of low speed, heavy load, high dust or high ambient temperature.
Efficient transmission system:
Torque converter + power shift gearbox: Mainstream configuration, providing smooth start, powerful torque amplification capability and convenient operation.
Hydrostatic transmission: Used on some high-end or compact off-road forklifts, providing stepless speed change and precise control.
Differential lock: Usually equipped with a rear axle differential lock, which locks the differential when the wheel slips severely and forces the power to be transmitted to the wheel with adhesion. It is a key device for getting out of trouble.
3. Frame and working device:
Heavy-duty rigid frame: The overall structure is extremely strong and can withstand huge torsional loads when driving and working on bumpy roads.
Optimized center of gravity design: Despite the high ground clearance, through reasonable layout, efforts are made to maintain a low and stable center of gravity to prevent rollover.
Large-angle mast: The forward and backward tilt angles of the mast are usually larger than those of ordinary forklifts, which is crucial for stabilizing and adjusting the position of cargo when working on slopes.
These special structures make off-road forklifts an ideal choice for construction sites, forest farms, farms, mines, docks, disaster relief, and any material handling operations that require leaving paved roads.
